Nintendo and Let’s Play Revenue
May 19, 2013 in Blog/News Discussion
I was left somewhat flummoxed this week by the internet reaction to Nintendo claiming revenue from Youtube Just Play videos. Basically the Big N has decided to claim ad-revenue on user-created videos which feature Nintendo games. So for instance, all the videos I’ve created for WoN in the past, ad-revenue will go straight to Nintendo rather than me the end-user. And I have no problem with that for one primary reason:
Let’s Play videos are built on the intellectual property of gaming companies like Nintendo. At the end of the day it’s their products, creativity and talent which is being thrown around the web, and so I have no problem with them claiming ad-revenue from videos which use its I.P. Some factions of the gaming world are up in arms however; lets enjoy an example of negative comments hitting the web:
“Each Let’s Play video constitutes an individual performance by the person that created the video. Nintendo shouldn’t profit from their work.”
“Gamers have already paid for the games, and they’re essentially providing free advertisements for Nintendo.”
Some responses from the yes we’re in favour camp:
“It’s their IP and they should be able to claim ad-revenue off it. It’s not like they’ve asked to have the videos taken down.”
“People who make money off Let’s Play don’t deserve it. Play for the game, not the money, Nintendo deserves it.”
So what’s your view? Feel free to share them here?
