Rumour: Wii U US RRP Will Be No Less Than $300

2012/04/10 in Blog/News Discussion, Wii U

Share on TwitterDigg ThisSave on DeliciousShare on Myspace

According to a recent rumor thats recently hit the web, production costs of the Wii U per console is $180. That means with Nintendo’s pricing structure in terms of profit margins, folk in the US will see a Wii U launch price of at least $300. For us in the UK, $300 is the currency equivalent of £190 which means (if true) we’re look at a launch RRP of £200 or more.

Does this seem like a good price range to you?

Lower Wii U Specs Doesn’t Bother Me At All

2012/04/04 in Blog/News Discussion, Wii U

Share on TwitterDigg ThisSave on DeliciousShare on Myspace

In recent days I’ve seen articles hit the web about a rumour which states that Wii U could be less powerful than current 360 and PS3 hardware. This of course resulted in lots of complaints, doom scenarios and other things which I cannot be bothered to mention here. I really don’t care about any of this and I would like to spend time highlighting why.

1. Specs simply don’t matter anymore in today’s gaming market. To be honest I don’t think they’ve mattered for a number of years now. I know the so called hardcore complained about Wii’s lack of HD visuals but that didn’t stop the console selling like hotcakes. The victor of this generation is Wii pure and simple. It boasted great titles from Nintendo’s major franchises and latched onto a casual market which Sony and Microsoft failed to tap into until it was to late. And we are also in the day and age of tablets, apps and gadgets which are supported by underpowered hardware. People are going mad over titles like Angry Birds which can run on the most underpowered mobile phones. Even a modern OS like Windows 8 will require less specs than Windows 7. The market is changing and I don’t think a supposed low spec machine will make any difference to Nintendo in the long run.

2. I don’t care if Wii U is underpowered compared to PS3 and 360 hardware because Nintendo’s franchises will look great regardless. That Zelda demo at E3 was simply stunning! I didn’t sit there thinking ‘wow that’s not processing digits as quick as the 360 or PS3′. I was bewildered by a prototype people and I can guarantee you that Nintendo’s major franchises will be treated with greater flair than a prototype. The greater the life span of the console, the greater pushing of the hardware will occur and I for one can’t wait to see what the Big N has in store for us.

And so I thought I would just share those thoughts. I sign off with a big WHO CARES ABOUT THESE RUMOURS ANYWAY! :)

According to the leaked memo, Wii U will launch in the Americas on Sunday, November 18th 2012 with the Japanese launch following one week later. There was no mention of a European launch in the memo but it looks like Nintendo will follow a similar schedule for the Wii’s launch in 2006.

SAN FRANCISCO, March 6, 2012 — Game Developer’s Conference — Autodesk, Inc., (NASDAQ: ADSK) has entered into a landmark license agreement allowing Nintendo Co., Ltd. to provide Autodesk Gameware technology to its licensed developers creating video games for the upcoming Wii U platform and helping differentiate Nintendo’s new hardware, expected to hit store shelves later this year.

Under terms of the agreement, Autodesk, Inc. has granted Nintendo the right to provide licensed Wii U game developers with three Gameware products: Autodesk Scaleform middleware for user interface development, Autodesk Kynapse middleware for artificial intelligence and Autodesk HumanIK middleware for interactive character animation.

The Autodesk Gameware product line is comprised of production-proven game development solutions that have been used in at least 1,000 games to date. “Autodesk Gameware technology is used by the industry’s elite development teams and has been adopted across the industry. Through our relationships with key companies like Nintendo, we can put our solutions into the hands of more game developers,” said Marc Petit, Autodesk senior vice president, Media and Entertainment. “Adopting Autodesk Gameware helps streamline the production process, freeing more resources for innovation in new areas. This shift in development focus will help make the next-generation of titles more compelling than the last.”

Work Has Started on Two Major Franchises

2012/02/23 in 3DS, Blog/News Discussion, Wii U

Work has now started on the next Smash Bros and Zelda titles. The main man behind ‘Smash Bros’ Masahiro Sakurai has started his quest by by looking at the Smash Bros Dojo website. His quest of course is to create the long awaited Smash Bros 3DS and Wii U titles which Iwata first announced at E3 2010.

In other news US 3DS owners found a new 3DS swapnote from Eiji Aonuma. In it he writes “I hope your looking forward to new Legend of Zelda games.” We already know that he’s working on a new title for Wii U. While putting together the Hyrule Historia book last year, Aonuma hinted at a new title when he wrote “we’ve already set sail in a new voyage.”

So are you looking forward to seeing what Sakurai and Aonuma are working on?

Toki Tori Sequel Coming to Wii U

2012/02/10 in Blog/News Discussion, Wii U, Wiiware

Share on TwitterDigg ThisSave on DeliciousShare on Myspace

Can you remember Toki Tori? It was one of the first Wiiware games which to this day remains one of the highlights of Nintendo’s download library of games.

Developer Two Tribes announced the game with the following statement:

“The first Toki Tori was a launch game for the original WiiWare download service in 2008 and today we’ve decided that we are going to do everything in our power to make sure Toki Tori 2 graces Nintendo’s upcoming HD console as well… You may wonder why we decided this just now. Nintendo recently released information on their online strategy, which sounds much more robust than before. The 3DS eShop has been a big step in the right direction compared to the Wii and DSi online shops, and it would be strange if they did not at least match it’s functionality on Wii U. Since Toki Tori 2 is designed to be a downloadable title, these things are vital to making the correct choice of which platforms to develop for.”

It’s good to finally hear developers give Nintendo credit for its recent online endeavours.

2012/01/27 in Blog/News Discussion, Wii 2, Wii U

Share on TwitterDigg ThisSave on DeliciousShare on Myspace

It seems Nintendo are considering a new name for Wii U. A source close to Nintendo has supposedly revealed that the Big N is worried about confusing the consumer with two home consoles which share similar branding.

Do you think Wii U should get a new name? If so do you have any ideas regarding an identity for Nintendo’s upcoming home console.

A member over at the Neogaf forums has uncovered a document on a Singaporean government site that shows that Nintendo is currently on its fourth or possibly fifth Wii U development kit. To put that in perspective the Wii apparently had five development kits. Sounds interesting, this certainly shows the efforts Nintendo are putting into the soon to be detailed console :)

Ubisoft Optimistic About Wii U Potential

2011/11/08 in Wii U

Share on TwitterDigg ThisSave on DeliciousShare on Myspace

Ubisoft is a big believer in Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U home console.

“We are big believers in the Wii U, on two subjects… One is for high-end games, where we’ll be able to do a game for the Wii U, but also for other (high-definition) machines, but also with specific use of (Wii U’s) tablet. Two, is we like the Wii U for all the (potential of) casual games… We are supporting the machine because we believe Nintendo is going to push it to another level. We think (Wii U) will be successful.”

I do wonder if pricing will be an issue with Wii U but we shall have to wait and see. I truly hope Ubisoft’s outlook is correct. :)

Team Ninja Are Pushing Wii U Hardware To Its Limits

2011/10/10 in Wii U

Share on TwitterDigg ThisSave on DeliciousShare on Myspace

Tecmo Koei localization head Peter Garza has told VG247 that Team Ninja are trying their absolute hardest to push the Wii U hardware to its limits with the forthcoming Ninja Gaiden 3. The game itself is still in the very early stages of development, but the team are already tinkering around with the Wii U controller to find out how to make it shine.

“We’re still finding out what the hardware can do and how to work with the hardware itself. Right now, we’re at a very early stage, so we can’t say that we’re pushing it to its limits right now.

“But I can tell you that the team being what it is is definitely interested in pushing the hardware as hard as it can. With 3DS, when we brought out Dead or Alive: Dimensions, that was one of the best looking 3DS games out there.”

“And we really wanted to use whatever hardware we were on, we want to use to its full potential and really push that. Not just in spec, but the features that make that hardware unique. So for right now with Wii U, we’re just starting to know what Wii U is and how we can make it fun.”
