Games Beat has revealed that Sony issued a Wii U like patent during 2010. The patent is Titled Position-Dependent Gaming 3-D controller, and Handheld as a Remote. Here’s a brief description of the patent which bears a striking resemblance to what Nintendo has proposed with Wii U:

Methods and systems for using a position of a mobile device with an integrated display as an input to a video game or other presentation are presented. Embodiments include rendering an avatar on a mobile device such that it appears to overlay a competing user in the real world. Using the mobile device’s position, view direction, and the other user’s mobile device position, an avatar (or vehicle, etc.) is depicted at an apparently inertially stabilized location of the other user’s mobile device or body. Some embodiments may estimate the other user’s head and body positions and angles and reflect them in the avatar’s gestures.

Well for so long we got to see Japanese trailers for The Last Story but now we’ve finally got an English trailer to watch.

Thanks to a deal struck with free-hotspot.com, Nintendo will be bringing more than an extra 5000 hotspots to Europe. The hotspots will be making their way to fast food restaurants and hotel chains like McDonald’s, Burger King, KFC and Subway.

So how will this all work? Well whenever you take your 3DS into a restaurant or hotel, your 3DS will automatically connect which in turn will provide you with free internet access. This will allow you to access the eShop, download and play games online.

It will be nice to have more hotspot support for 3DS systems.

100 year old Kathleen Connell celebrated her 100th birthday by receiving a letter from the Queen and playing her Nintendo DS. And why is her brain still sharp at such a good age? She says it’s all down to playing titles like Brain Age, Art Academy and Scrabble. She finished off her interview with the daily telegraph by saying “I can’t speak highly enough” about Nintendo’s most popular hand held. Stories like this make supporting Nintendo worth it.

Microsoft’s marketing director of France, Cedrick Delmas has told reporters that Nintendo isn’t looking to compete against other console manufactures, and other console manufactures aren’t looking to compete against them. But are Sony and Microsoft right to leave Nintendo to itself and conversely is it right for Nintendo to not try to compete against Sony and Microsoft?

“We’re not here to counter Nintendo and they’re not here to fight the other manufacturers. Nintendo has put itself in a different cycle, they’re advancing at their own pace.”

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has told investors that no one can replace Shigeru Miyamoto. Miyamoto was mentioned due to the retirement rumours that circulated late last year, which both Iwata and Miyamoto have categorically denied. Iwata stressed that younger developers who were previously under Miyamoto’s wing have now been allowed to work independently from the revered developer.

“Of course, no single person can replace Mr. Miyamoto instantaneously. They are living in a different age from Mr. Miyamoto and their experiences are different from Mr. Miyamoto’s. On the other hand, there have been many people who have observed how Mr. Miyamoto works, have worked with him or have been left in situations where they have to take on more significant responsibility without being allowed to be dependent upon Mr. Miyamoto.”

Fumihiko Yasuda and Yosuke Hayashi have told Gamefront that the Wii U is extremely easy to develop for and is very similar to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in that respect. Hayashi also went on to say that the Wii U hardware is constantly changing.

“Nintendo asked us what we would want from the hardware. And when we gave them our feedback, we could see that they really listened and made changes. The hardware is currently changing constantly.”

“The control via a touch screen is like the Nintendo DS, we worked on the NDS with Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword, and we would like to take some elements from it and install them in the U Wii version of Ninja Gaiden 3.”

Shigeru Miyamoto has confessed to investors that he feels pressured to find the next big hit Nintendo franchise which will change the face of the games industry and also the fortunes of Nintendo. Miyamoto wouldn’t be drawn into revealing his plans but we do know he’s been working on hard on a new Nintendo IP so hopefully he can cook up yet another awesome series.

“I am spending more time than before on finding new ideas for new developments rather than focusing my energy on work in my (development) teams in order to solidify the contents of (existing) franchise titles. After all, developing big hit titles must be the solution [to Nintendo’s ongoing financial losses].”
“I am acting with the understanding that one big hit title can change multiple phases of a situation in the entertainment business, and I feel that finding such one big hit is my basic job.”

It seems Nintendo are considering a new name for Wii U. A source close to Nintendo has supposedly revealed that the Big N is worried about confusing the consumer with two home consoles which share similar branding.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told investors early this morning that gamers are now ready for new video games consoles. Iwata pointed to declining sales of all the major home consoles as the reason that consumers are looking towards brand new formats.

“However, not just the Wii, but the overall performance of home consoles in December was lower than the previous year, and I think that the market is now waiting for a new proposal for home consoles.”

Super Mario 3D Land is the very first Nintendo 3DS title to sell over five million units according to Nintendo. The company announced that Super Mario 3D Land has sold 5.03 million copies globally since the title launched in November of last year. Mario Kart 7 has also sold a fair number of units with 4.54 million units sold to date around the world. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has clarified that Nintendo has no intention of publishing unfinished games just to make some extra money from paid downloadable content. We already know however that the Nintendo Network will support paid DLC…

“Nintendo, as a software maker, does not plan to [run a business] where our consumers cannot know in advance which [product] will appear as the result of their payment,” Iwata said. “As a software maker, Nintendo believes that its packaged software should be sold to our consumers in a form so that the consumers will know in advance that they can enjoy playing the software they purchased just as it is.”

Nintendo has announced that the Wii U controller will feature Near Field Communication, or NFC for short, which according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata will allow the Wii U to do the following:

“By installing this functionality, it will become possible to create cards and figurines that can electronically read and write data via noncontact NFC and to expand the new play format in the video game world.”

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata also revealed that the Wii U will get personal user accounts similar to those seen on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. This should mean that digital purchases will be linked to user accounts, rather than the actual console.

“Also for the Wii U, we are planning to introduce a personal account system compatible with Nintendo Network. With this, for example, the ease of using a video game system when the hardware is shared by multiple family members, which has been a challenge we needed to tackle, shall be improved, and we will also be able to construct and offer the system by combining a variety of different services and content.”
